South Petherton & Islemoor – Paul Sellers

I have lived in Ilminster with my partner Rose since 1980. I studied politics and economics as a mature student and work for the Trades Union Congress (TUC) where I have focused on transport and road safety and was a member of the Vehicle Crime Reduction Panel for the last Labour Government.

I am standing for the County Council because I believe that the Government’s target of 3 million apprentices must be met. The Council has an important role to play in this; it must ensure that work packages and training are developed that will be attractive to the young people of Somerset and will cause them to stay and make their lives here. I can offer support in this activity, and I can hold the Council to account.

Also vital to rural wards, such as South Petherton & Islemoor, is public transport and road links to support the economies of small towns. I will press the Council to ensure that there is improvement in bus services, ensuring the right routes at the right time and at a fair price. I will also encourage SCC to press other agencies to improve links to trunk roads so that our rural businesses can get their products to market, improving local job opportunities.
