As a retired secondary school teacher, I am particularly concerned about the well being of teenagers and young adults. A decade of cuts in social care has seriously undermined the ability of local authorities to provide an adequate level of support for children and young people. Children’s centres have been depleted and the County youth service dismantled. One of the biggest budget cuts made by Somerset County Council in 2016 was to mental health services, inevitably leading to delays in referrals and a reduction of places in local specialist units for vulnerable young people.
As a Labour Councillor, I would lobby for the high quality, integrated youth careers and counselling services that our young people deserve.
