Members of Somerton and Frome CLP at the Burston school children’s march today (1 April 2014) from Burston School, Norfolk and round the ‘Candlestick’ to the Strike School to mark the centenary of the original strike march on 1 April 1914.

The children’s march in 1914 was in protest at the dismissal of Tom and Annie Higdon as the school teachers on trumped up charges as the then Squire and Vicar did not like them being Christian Socialists and Trade Unionists. The strike became the longest strike in history and ran until 1939 with the Higdons continuing to teach the children of Burston at the strike school.
