Somerset Green Jobs Campaign: On Line Meeting 9th September

Green jobs

On Thursday 9th September at 7.30 is the online launch meeting of the Somerset Green Jobs Campaign. Chaired by Irena Hubble-Brezowski, Chair of Bridgwater & District Labour Party, the speakers will include Chris Saltmarsh, Labour for a Green New Deal, Gareth Lowe, Unite the Union, Den Carter, Sustainable Wells/Extinction Rebellion, Richard Capps, Weston & North Somerset TUC . The meeting, organised jointly by Bridgwater Labour Party and Bridgwater Trades Union Council, is on Zoom and all are welcome.

In a statement put out by the organisers a series of questions were posed and answered..

Does the grim prospect of double climate and unemployment emergencies provide an opportunity
for workers to secure, through strong trades unions, a decent sustainable future? If so, how do we
get to that future?

“Control your future”

Private business is incapable of changing sufficiently to match the challenge of runaway climate catastrophe. There is little or no chance of a radical change in direction from the current UK government.

So, how can workers, unions, activists, win support from the public to transform the situation?

What kind of work do workers want to perform? Why cannot stronger unions start to challenge the right of employers to dictate what they produce?

How do we ensure that skilled jobs increase rather than disappear, that no one is left behind in a transition to a green, sustainable economy?

The launch of the Somerset Green Jobs Campaign, a joint initiative by Bridgwater and District Labour Party and Bridgwater & District Trades Union Council, gives local people a chance to debate and explore these questions.

FOUNDING STATEMENT

For a Green Jobs revolution!

WE NOTE:

The UK faces a post-covid unemployment crisis with insecurity and low-pay rife for workers. Intensifying climate and environmental breakdown brings devastating threats to public health and livelihoods.

WE BELIEVE:

  • Privatisation has undermined decarbonisation and pandemic response measures.
  • Ahead of ‘COP26’, the Glasgow United Nations Climate Summit in November 2021, we should promote a just, green recovery combining efforts
  • to address unemployment, climate change, and public health. We can solve the unemployment crisis and rapidly decarbonise with a socialist ‘Green New Deal’ that has public ownership of industries including energy, water, transport, mail and telecommunications.
  • We RESOLVE TO SUPPORT: A government programme creating millions of well-paid, unionised green jobs with publicly owned entities, including:
  • Mass investment in green technologies;
  • Expansion and electrification of public transport, including free local bus networks;
  • Just climate adaptation, investing in fire and rescue services, flood defences, and resilient infrastructure;
  • Retrofitting all homes by 2030 with mandatory building standards;
  • Agricultural transition;
  • Universal basic services, including:
  • a National Care Service;
  • Universal free broadband;
  • National Nature service including ten new national parks and strategic rewilding.
  • A just transition away from polluting industries with a comprehensive re-training program and green job guarantee on union rates for affected workers.
  • Repealing all anti-trade union laws.
  • Creating well-financed publicly owned national and regional green investment banks.
  • Using public procurement to promote decarbonisation, environmental protections, and international justice in global supply chains.
  • A global socialist Green New Deal, cancelling debt and freely sharing technology and resources internationally.
  • We agree to launch and support a Somerset Green Jobs Campaign to pursue these aims where we live and work.
